Getting Started with MUGIC 3

Mari Kimura

Event Recap: Saturday, March 29, 2025 | 11:00 AM PST

We were honored to host a special live Zoom info session led by Mari Kimura—renowned violinist, composer, and founder of MUGIC®.

This event spotlighted three incredible MUGIC users: Conner Simmons, Kevin Anthony, and Eric Lemmon—each bringing their own creative and academic perspectives to the ever-expanding world of gesture-based music performance.

Connor Simmons

Conner Simmons is a graduate student and teaching assistant for Levy Lorenzo at The New School, one of the first major adopters of MUGIC2—even before its official release. Conner participated in a three-day workshop led by Mari Kimura at The New School, where his energy and insight stood out immediately.

As an artist working at the intersection of performance and technology, Conner continues to experiment with how MUGIC can enhance live music and gesture-driven sound design.

Kevin Anthony

Kevin Anthony was Mari Kimura’s first Ph.D. advisee at UC Irvine, and has been an early champion of MUGIC since its first iteration. Now a professor at Brigham Young University, Kevin played a key role in integrating MUGIC into the university’s curriculum, purchasing MUGIC1 for student use and creative exploration.

Kevin’s long-standing relationship with MUGIC reflects his commitment to using technology to empower expression, both as an artist and educator.

Eric Lemmon

Eric Lemmon earned his Ph.D. from SUNY Stony Brook and was an integral part of Ensemble Decipher, a contemporary music collective that explores new media and performance technologies. The ensemble commissioned Mari Kimura’s now iconic MUGIC work, KISMET (The Dog Chewtoy Piece).

Eric is currently a professor at Knox College, where he continues to push the boundaries of interactive performance, integrating tools like MUGIC into experimental composition and teaching.
